The Story...........

        The versatile do-all and be-all truck from Mercedes Benz, UNIMOG is an acronym for UNIversal-MOtorGerät a German phrase which means Universal-Power-Unit. UNIMOG began life in the late 1940’s as a tractor for farm use. The idea was to give farmers a tractor for working the fields that was also roadworthy for transporting their crops to market. Unimogs are widely used today by Militaries and Municipalities for a variety of tasks.

        The most common UNIMOG is the NATO commissioned S 404.1. Mercedes Benz engineered these trucks with off-road capability and dependability in mind. They were designed to carry heavy loads for long distances over the roughest terrain imaginable. To keep ground clearance high (15.7"), the S404.1 features 20" wheels and uses the concept of portal axles. With a portal setup, the axle does not go directly into the center of the hub. Instead, the axle is offset to the top of the hub and a series of hub-gears transfer torque to the wheels. To keep the center of gravity low, the engine and drive train are mounted very low in the frame. For this reason, the UNIMOG is very hard to roll and can handle a side slope of up to 42 degrees.

        UNIMOG utilizes an early version of shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive can be engaged, as well as the differentials locked, in any of the 6 forward and 2 reverse gears. All the while, the operator remains comfortably within the confines of the cab.

        The frame is a simple ladder type that allows for maximum flex while traversing rough terrain. The suspension, pictured at right, is designed to work in conjunction with the frame to allow maximum axle articulation under these same extreme conditions.
